Here's what the experts are saying...

Dr. Woods had the vision to revitalize our original work into a contemporary, unique textbook. After completing the self-learning exercises in this book, nurse managers will have a current, “big picture” understanding of their role in health care economics. This unique “stop and study” resource teaches managers the importance of revenue and cost drivers, and gives them the essential tools to understand all aspects of accounting and budgeting at the nursing unit level. This textbook also includes practical tools to prepare the nurse leader to manage scarce resources, while considering quality indicators, risk management, patient safety, and utilization review. Thank you, Dr. Woods, for breathing new and improved life into the Fundamentals of Accounting and Budgeting for Nurse Managers.
Sally and Joe Todd, Friday Harbor, WA.

It was a delight to be an early reader of Dr. Woods' accounting and budgeting book for nurse managers. As both a university accounting teacher and major hospital system chief financial officer, I can attest to the difficulty new nurse supervisors and managers face when they assume a leadership role for the first time.  Nurse Managers are correctly chosen for their clinical expertise, but little thought is given to the challenges they confront in running the business aspects of a nursing unit.  Most hospitals assume that business expertise will magically occur or will be second nature to these new managers, when the opposite is often true.  A nurse manager can be knowledgeable about their clinical area, a good leader of people and determined to succeed, but still fail without the right business tools to guide them.  Dr. Woods has "bridged the gap" in such a way that the clinical manager can now also be the business champion of his or her nursing unit. Whether it is in determining staffing needs, preparing proposals for management on new services, managing to budget or simply just understanding the importance of good cost and productivity measurements, Dr. Woods has presented it all in a simple, straightforward manner that allows the student or new nurse manager to read and practice for his or her new role.  Before Fundamentals of Accounting and Budgeting for Nurse Mangers and Leaders, nurse manager success was hit-or-miss, based on the training provided by the hospital, or provided by the Chief Nursing Officer. Now, the student or new manager can ensure his or her own success by reading, understanding, and practicing the lessons in the Fundamentals text. This book should be a required reading for all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for all new nurse managers.  It is an exceptional nurse management training tool!

Great nursing management fundamentals book. When I started this book, I had no experience in the fundamentals of nursing management, or an understanding of what elements of business and financial management are necessary for nursing leaders. After working through this book, I feel I am well versed in what I need to know to be a great nurse leader in the future.
Dina Hill B.S., RN,C, Marion, Kentucky

Fundamentals is a wonderful resource, not only for new nurse managers but also for the more experienced. Concise, easy to understand information, pertinent for day-to-day financial management. Fundamentals should be mandatory reading for all managers.
Patricia Quigley, RN, BSN, CCRN, Flagstaff, AZ

Fundamental’s was a great help to me as a new manager with no accounting experience.  I had no idea how to figure FTEs or hours of care. Previously, when planning a budget it was very difficult because I did not have the fundamentals that I needed. Now, after using the Fundamental’s book I can do these and many other step-by-step processes. This book is a must for all new nurse managers.
